Mortice locks are slightly more secure than spring latch cylinder locks, the reason for this is they lock in a dead locking position. 
When a key is inserted and turned fully, the cut of the key aligns up the levers allowing the bolt to pass and drop into the locked position. Most insurance companies will request some sort of mortice lock, normally a 5 lever British standard one as they add they bit of extra security to your property. Opening and replacing these locks is also a common service a locksmith will provide.
